The Pirates are going to be great next year!
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are interested in the following free agents:
Xavier Nady (Lost season in 2009 due to injury)
Rick Ankiel (11 home runs, 38 rbis, .231 batting average in 2009)
Bobby Crosby (8 home runs, 31 rbis, .223 batting average in 2009)*
Ron Villone (40 year old middle reliever)
This from a team that received $35 million in revenue sharing from the league last year but had a $25 million payroll at the end of the year after unloading all of their decent players.
And the Pirates have fans why?
*He could provide "protection" for Ankiel in the batting order. I get it.

Ouch. That is a painful list. Especially Villone and Crosby. Villone has not had an ERA under 4.00 in 12 years. Crosby's career is puzzling. Two decent seasons while young and garbage through his prime.
Ankiel I like, but more because of his story and hardcore playing mentality. There was talk on the Orioles boards about getting him.
It's funny, Ankiel walked everyone when he was a pitcher, now that he is a hitter, he can't draw a walk to save his life (.285 OBP in 2009).
Nady is a solid player.
Ken,
As you probably guessed, there is a heavy dose of sarcasm in my post which is par for the course around here.
I agree that Nady is solid and probably somebody Pittsburgh should target considering their payroll.
In the Cardinals games I saw this year, I thought Ankiel seemed overmatched a bit too often at the plate and I wonder whether he has regressed perhaps due to injury. None the less, probably worth the risk for a team like the Pirates.
Now the other two...
Kevin
Ha ha...yeah I sensed the sarcasm.
