Curtis Granderson said that her will wear No. 14 with the Yankees, the number his father used to wear in a men's softball league.
Gulp.
A productive player with a reasonable salary, well spoken, LOVED in the community and honors his parents.
And the Tigers couldn't wait to get rid of him. Couldn't have him around. "Who wants him?"
I punish my kids when they make critical thinking errors like this.*
*Well not really but you get the point.

I am still pissed about this. We unload a valuable player(for all the reasons you listed) and keep Singl-io? I don't get it.
Sewing Machine Guy,
I hear you.
I think the Tigers knew that the back-end of Magglio's contract would be rough but they thought they had to give him that to get him here. It did pay off in 2006 and later with a batting title. It is very mysterious though how someone can completely lose their power stroke overnight.
That said, if you think you have a payroll problem, I would not look to move a $5 million salaried player who is a productive and popular player.
My (partial) saeson ticket plan will remain with me forever but I have heard from others who have a different opinion.

I am really sorry that the Tigers had to give him up. I can only hope that he is as appreciated by my fellow Yankees fans as he was by the Tiger faithful. I just recently heard him being interviewed for the first time and I was blown away by how well spoken and respectable he sounded.
I agree that it is really weird to try and move the base of your team who was relatively inexpensive, rather than trying to offload some other bigger ticket items that a team like the Mets may have gambled on. The Mets especially would have been a good team to try to offload an overpaid vet on because they have expendable payload and are desperate for a fix.
Nico,
He is a class act. New Yorkers will love him on and off the field.
Unfortunately, most of Detroit's high price "talent" like Willis, Robertson and Bonderman is untradeable even to a team like the Mets. I hesitate to throw Magglio in there as up to last year, he earned his money but he is also untradeable at $18 million a year.
