Ummmm.....Hello NHL?!
The NHL has announced that they have given $100,000 through UNICEF for the Haitian relief effort.
(Stunned silence)
(Double checks the number of zeroes on that figure real quick)
(Still silent)
Ok, here's the thing. I like professional hockey. I like the NHL, OHL, WHL and QMJHL. I go to more hockey games in a year than baseball games but some of that is a byproduct of having a professional arena/rink very close to home. There should be no bias against the NHL on my part here.
Ok, now that we have that out of the way, I am frankly surprised, considering the figure, that the NHL would even publicize this.
I know every bit helps* but I can't help notice that NHL revenues were $2.25 billion (yes with a "b") last year.
I sure hope they are not asking for a repayment plan.
Maybe even the "Brocade" company gave more.**
*Look. I feel a tad uncomfortable bringing this whole thing up as I would not want anyone questioning my Haiti contribution (though we did make one) but at the same time, if I threw a quarter in the donation basket, I am sure some eyebrows would be raised.
**That lady in the back who is regretting wearing shorts to the rink? Well, I could have told her that.

* There are 30 NHL teams. Simple math says that, on average, each team ponied up $3,333.33. Attendance figures that were released just a few weeks ago show that the smallest average crowd is in Phoenix, with 10,408 fans per game. The largest average crowd is in Montreal, with 21,273 fans per game.
For a single game, Phoenix would take about 32 cents from each ticket to make their share of the contribution. Montreal would be about half of that, with just under 16 cents per ticket.
Now, this $100,000 figure probably came from the League, not the individual teams. But it would be pretty funny if the Canadiens dug into their bank account and made a donation of $125,000 on their own. That's less than a dollar per ticket per fan for six games.
** That's no lady. That's a dude. Bending over. Bet you feel silly now.
NFL 2.5 mil
MLB 1.0 mil
NHL 100k
yeeeah. nice work Bettman. make us proud.
Mark,
You are probably right on the dude/gal. He/she has a generic unisex face and hairstyle but the legs are a bit muscular and I think most ladies would probably not be seen dead in those cruddy white socks.
I am going to have to ask my wife to be the arbiter of this dispute.
Or better yet, Computer Boy will be home from school shortly and he has an opinion on everything.
Kevin
Captain Canuck,
Don't forget Tiger Woods: $3 million.
The guy has some serious problems but he came to the table.
Kevin
Kevin,
But did Tiger come to the table as a genuine act or is it to help his image?
Past donations (Katrina, etc.) from him were at a much lower dollar amount.
Sticky situation to be discussed. In general, any and all donations are appreciated, I'm sure.
The question is how much of each dollar raised gets to the intended purpose. Some organization have quite a high overhead. Yes, it takes money to raise money. But I digress.
Mark
Mark,
I think Tiger saw a golden opportunity and he took it. He may have even wanted to donate more and his advisors may have talked him out of it. As anybody would, I am of course sceptical of his motives considering his circumstances.
$3 million is $3 million.
I just caught the "bending-over guy". My brain was not processing that right each time I saw it. All neurons were not really firing but I think I am on all cylinders now. Thanks for getting me straight.
Kevin
