Born today, none other than Darrell Evans.
Bill James described Evans as the most underrated player in baseball history.
Not to be any type of "contrarian" here or anything but I don't think anybody with a career average of .248 is underrated, let alone the "most underrated".*
*Yea, I know he hit over 400 home runs and took a lot of walks but at the end of the day, he hit .248.

C'mon, batting average is practically irrelevant these days.
Evans AVG .248 OBP .361
Jim Rice AVG .298 OBP .352
That's just a random comparison.
Point taken.
That said, Jim Rice ain't no legitimate Hall of Famer. He got in because a few Boston sportswriters decided long ago that he was the "most feared" hitter of his time and then writers nationwide ran with that and it became a "fact".
I never heard a pitcher say they were "afraid" of Rice. I am sure they respected him but they also probably liked to pitch to him with a runner on first base considering how many double plays he hit into.
