"Perry Como was kind of new in New York then. There was a guy in the locker room once the hubbub quieted down. He offered me 500 bucks to appear on Como's show and I thought at that time, I could sure use that. But a special moment like that, you want to spend the time with your family. He said, 'We'd really like to have you, we'll give you $1000'. I thought for a thousand bucks, the family can wait."
