On this date in 1940, the sacrifice fly rule is eliminated for the 1941 season. "Sacrifice flies" will be counted as an at bat and an out for batting statistics.

Of course, Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. He did have six long flies (sacrifice flies if there was such a thing that year) that drove in runners from third base.

Had the sacrifice fly rule been in effect and the six at bats deducted from his total, Williams would have batted .411 that year.

The sacrifice fly rule was reinstated in 1954.
