Frank Robinson

On this date in 1956, Reds rookie, Frank Robinson hits the first of his 586 lifetime home runs in a 9-1 victory over the Cubs.

"Pitchers did me a favor when they knocked me down. It made me more determined. I wouldn't let that pitcher get me out. They say you can't hit if you're on your back, but I didn't hit on my back. I got up."

I recently saw him up close at a baseball card convention. He sure is one big guy. Even at his age now, he was imposing.
