Herb Washington


On this date in 1975, the Oakland A's release pinch runner, Herb Washington. Washington played in 105 major league games without hitting, pitching or fielding and collected 31 stolen bases and scored 33 runs.

"I'd never been up to the plate, yet I'd stolen 29 bases, scored 29 runs and appeared in 92 games. If I were to get an at bat, I'd be just like every other major leaguer. So I turned Alvin down. If I hadn't, I'd have lost my significance."

On turning down manager Al Dark's offer to pinch-hit in a game.
