Under appreciated and under recognized as a great hitter. His home run legacy overshadows his lifetime batting average. Add the plate appearances he missed being a pitcher for so many years, and he would still be the home run king.
Agree that he is underappreciated for all the reasons you mentioned. He also single-handedly changed the game from a slap-happy/Ty Cobb type game to one we more recognize today.
