Herb Washington

On this date in 1975, the A's release pinch runner, Herb Washington. Washington played in 105 major league games without hitting, pitching or fielding and collected 31 stolen bases and scored 33 runs.

"I'd never been up to the plate, yet I'd stolen 29 bases, scored 29 runs and appeared in 92 games. If I were to get an at bat, I'd be just like every other major leaguer. So I turned Alvin down. If I hadn't, I'd have lost my significance."

On turning down Al Dark's offer to pinch-hit in a game.

The Cubs Tony Campana reminds me of Herb but better. Tony had 24 stolen bases in just 155 plate appearances last year. This year he's hitting .315 and already has 7 SB in 36 plate appearances.

That's a pretty good anecdote. I've heard of Herb Washington (mainly because we share a birthday) but he was a little before my time so I never paid close attention to his stats. Although as a pinch running specialist, the number of times he was caught is kind of high!
