Jim Palmer

On this date in 1965, Jim Palmer of the Orioles picks up his first major league win, beating the Yankees 7-5. He also hits his first major league home run, a two-run drive off Jim Bouton, to give himself the margin of victory.

"Palmer is the greatest 'situation' pitcher I've ever seen. He makes them beat him on a single and one run at a time. Most of the homers he gives up are solo because he only works to their power when the bases are empty." - Ray Miller
