Profound clubhouse thoughts

"Some nights you just get beat." - Mike Quade

"We just got beat." - Jim Leyland

1 star out of 5 on the "cliche-meter": Remember that day you and your best friend accidentally wore the same shirt to school? The lunch table was hell!

The wit and wisdom of Jim Leyland

"They're goin' to the fu@&*n playoffs! We're not goin' anywhere!"

Dugout rant picked up by the game audio tonight.

Twitter reports from beat reporters in the clubhouse indicate that he is "going off".

How close are we to a repeat of the mid-season Colorado Rockies "I quit" declaration?

The dude does not handle adversity very well, we know that.

Maybe we crank-call his hotel room all night.

We can work in shifts!

End of an era

Today is a historic day in the life of Tiger manager, Jim Leyland.

You see Michigan's new law banning smoking in public buildings takes effect tomorrow and tonight's game will be the last time that Jim Leyland can legally chain-smoke at Comerica Park.*

As an added bonus, I will be there to witness this historic end of an era.

Just think of the changes that are about to happen. Sportswriters will hardly recognize the Tiger manager now that they will not be talking to him through clouds of smoke. The bullpen catcher presumably will no longer be bothered to go fetch Jim a pack of cigarettes in the middle of a game. Sportswriters, players, clubhouse attendants or visitors to the clubhouse will no longer leave the park smelling like smoke expelled from the lungs of the Tigers manager. They can even scrub the walls down there real good and get them back to their original color.

It's really a brave new world at 2100 Woodward Avenue starting tomorrow.

I understand great seats are still available for tonight's game. It's a bobblehead giveaway game for the kids. All adults get a free pack of cigarettes.**

*Actually, this may be "all for naught" as Leyland has said in the media that he cannot fully comply with the law. He is addicted you know.

**Ok, not really on the cigarettes.

Woe is us

"We have as brutal a schedule as you'll find. When you can't get a day game on the final day (of a series) it is ridiculous."

"I understand it's a gate (attendance) thing, that it's a money thing, but I think that's where people need to step in and say they want peak performances (during games), and that's ridiculous."

"It's gonna be a brutal trip."

Jim Leyland* on April 14th per Lynn Henning of the Detroit News.

Is it any surprise that they started the trip 0-2?

Way to set the tone Jim!

*"Hey Jim. This year we want to take the picture for your Topps card in front of your condo. We are trying to be a little edgy this year. No, we are 100% serious."
