Vladimir Guerrero announces retirement
"I don't have to get a pitch down the middle. If I like the pitch - even if it's 15 inches off the plate, and that's the pitch I wanted - I'm swinging."

A cripple stole a base on the Red Sox in an important game!
They gave up an inside-the-park home run on a "no-crazy-bounce" hit.
Someone jumped on the field and ran around a bit and then went to the Red Sox dugout and gave them the finger.
Someone made a pact.
Vegas would be nuts to put a line on any of the rest of their games this year. Don't mess with stuff you don't understand.

Vladimir Guerrero
So Vlad Guerrero has managed to get 104 plate appearances this year without a walk.
Hmmmm.
Hey, you only get one base anyway!
Also you get the benefit of a batter who has hit a home run on a pitch that bounced before it reached plate.
Helloooo! Pitchers can't throw it there anymore!
Get off his back!
Haters!

Good or bad infuence?
"I was talking to somebody and they were like, 'Pick his brain but don't swing at anything he does.'"
Adam Jones on new arrival, Vladimir Guerrero.*

Ok, lookin' a little old there
Those knee high hops off the outfield grass are killers though.
Tony Bennett plays it better.
Just a little reminder that he was once young.

If mama's not happy....

Just about every article I have read on the Angels Game 6 loss in the ALCS refers to it as Vladimir Guerrero's last game as an Angel with his contract expiring.
Well, maybe not so fast there.
Per Bob Bolch of the Los Angeles Times, Vlad had this to say regarding his future:
"I'm not thinking so much about the uncertainty, but I'm thinking about my mom and how comfortable she feels in Anaheim. That's always one thing that I'm going to think about regarding free agency. It would be very gratifying to continue to play with the guys I've known here and have gotten used to."
This has "hometown discount" written all over it.
If I am the Angels owner, Arte Moreno, I am thinking short-term contract with Vlad and the first thing I do is take him out to lunch and you can bet I am also inviting his mother. I would also invite my own mama if I thought it would help. Afterwards, these ladies can get massages and whatever else they do at Anaheim's finest spa; complete with Angels towels and bathrobes and whatever else they may want.
I wouldn't need to read any more articles on this if I was him. I would get this done like now.
As an owner, you gotta pick up on these subtle hints from your players you know.

Vlad pitch selection

TBS showed a "highlight" of a Vlad Guerrero at bat earlier in the year where he swung at a pitch that bounced before it crossed the plate and hit it for a base hit.
As good as he is, "hitting coach" is just not in his future.

Hooray for Vlad! (but not for Wilton)

Last night, Vladimir Guerrero hit his 400th career home run against the Rays.(Yay Vlad!) His mother and brother Wilton (389 home runs less than Vlad) were on hand at the game to savor the moment.
Per AP, Vlad had this to say about his family speculating on when he would hit the milestone home run: "My mom kept telling me there's two more. My brother Wilton had bad math and said it was one more. It's good it came here in front of the family."
That was close! Good thing they went to the right game! Otherwise, they may have gone to a previous game and wildly celebrated home run number 399 and expected an on-field commemoration or something.
If I was momma and we went to the wrong game because of my son's "bad math", I would not be a happy camper. Let's just leave it at that.
It would not be pretty though.
