We have had quite a bit of rain in the area lately.
There is a road near us that sits in a low lying area that floods frequently after heavy rains. Though it is a main road, it is not very heavily travelled. During rainy periods, most people know to avoid the road and that is not much of a problem for MOST PEOPLE.
Apparently, yesterday the road flooded and also a very large sinkhole developed in the road which could not be seen because the road was covered with water. The sinkhole is apparently large enough to envelop one or more cars. Because of the obvious road hazard here, the Road Commission put up a barricade on the road just before the flood waters with a sign attached which said "Road Closed".
Well, a licensed driver (with two kids in the car) drove on that road yesterday and encountered that barricade and sign. Did he stop? Well, maybe momentarily but maybe not at all. Anyway, he drove around the barricade (WITH TWO KIDS IN THE CAR) and promptly drove his vehicle into the water-covered sinkhole. Pictures of the vehicle show the vehicle at a 45 degree angle leaning into the water with the hood of the vehicle submerged and the rear of the car up in the air. The three occupants of the vehicle could only exit the vehicle with assistance of the fire department.
Ok, not good and people make mistakes even silly ones like this.
What makes this noteworthy is that the local television newstations had a camera crew out there and were interviewing the driver standing beside his partially submerged car. He was complaining a bit indignantly that this road has had a flooding problem for some time and the Road Commission had to do something about this. He did mention that, oh by the way, he was probably in the wrong for driving around the barricade which had a "ROAD CLOSED" sign but he emphasized that the real problem was the Road Commission which had not somehow altered this road more to his liking.
Ok, this is ridiculous and harping on this more is like shooting fish in a barrel but there was one interesting point I noticed about this television interview. During the interview, the camera only showed the man's feet and not his face or any other part of his body and I am sure this "anonymous-type" interview was at the request of the "indignant at the Road Commission" driver.
Funny that.
