A .415 winning percentage? Let's give him a 5 year extension.

I see that the Kansas City Royals gave their general manager, Dayton Moore a 5 year extension on his contract this week.

This is the record of the team since Mr. Moore took over in 2006:

2006: 62-100
2007: 69-93
2008: 75-87 (progress!)
2009: 51-81 (maybe not)

That works to a .415 winning percentage.

Ok. I do understand that the Kansas City Royals are a small market team and have some significant payroll limitations making it hard to compete. I also do not know how helpful the owner is (though I do know that he is generous with his executives). Further, I do understand that building a quality major league baseball team can be a long-term process not necessarily best measured by year-to-year results. I get all that.

But he has a winning percentage of .415!

I am not saying Moore should be fired now or that this should even be considered. For all I know, the Royals are on the path to success (though I would bet otherwise) and in a few years, they just might be respectable.

But a 5 year extension for a GM with a .415 winning percentage?

Wouldn't you want to save the 5 year extensions for Billy Beane, Theo Epstein or Branch Rickey? Those kind of guys?

He has a winning percentage of .415!

Or an average of .083 per year.

Nah. My math stinks.
