When was the last time....

.....a big name free agent signed with a team his people were consistently saying* that he didn't want to play for because he ran out of options and he didn't want to play for less than "market value"?

You are supposed to be happy when you sign these things, you know.

This should be interesting.

*Peter Gammons reported earlier that Bay would "rather play in Beirut than Queens" and the offer did sit for 3 weeks as Bay apparently kept saying that he couldn't find a pen with ink in it or something.

The Red Sox not being able to resign Bay = FAIL. Good for the Mets, but not it's not exactly filling a need, is it?

Even when the player doesn't WANT to play for the team, New York gets the star player.

I can't stand it.

TJ,

I think the Red Sox had a budget and were sticking to it.

As to the Mets, I think they thought they had to do something after last year but I am not quite getting this one. I guess time will tell if this signing is more of the Bobby Bonilla/ Cliff Floyd/Tom Glavine variety or of the Carlos Beltran variety.

Night Owl,

I like that one.

You can see in his face that he is so not a New Yorker. He's going to be miserable. And miserable players seem to fit the Mets criteria.
