Corky Miller

Born today, sometime major league catcher Corky Miller.

Four or five seasons ago, Computer Boy and I went to Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio to see the Toledo Mud Hens play the Rochester Red Wings.

At the game, fringe major league player, Corky Miller hit a very long home run and actually the longest home run that Computer Boy has ever seen. The ball hit the top of the Pepsi sign on the scoreboard beyond left field and was still "going pretty good and up" when it hit the sign.

From Corky Miller?

Um yea, Corky Miller.

Now I am not accusing anybody of anything but it just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me that lightly-regarded Corky Miller could hit a ball that far. It was like he hit a Super Ball with a corked aluminum bat. While he was running the bases, I do remember thinking, "Now how did he do that?" Again, I not accusing anybody of anything but I was never able to quite reconcile what I was saw that day with Corky Miller, the ballplayer.

Anyway, I can tell you that Computer Boy was very impressed. So much so that to this day, he collects Corky Miller cards.

The good thing is you can get those very cheap.

Happy birthday, Corky!

(We were there)
