So by now I am sure everybody has heard that Dwight Gooden was arrested Tuesday in New Jersey for driving under the influence of drugs after being involved in a two-car accident. Unfortunately, he apparently also had his 5-year old son in the car at the time.
It is noted that Gooden was charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance; driving under the influence of a controlled substance; endangering the welfare of a child; driving while intoxicated with a child passenger; leaving the scene of an accident; reckless driving; failure to keep right; and failure to change his address on his driver's license. All that stuff.
Obviously this is very serious and there is nothing funny about Gooden's struggles with substance abuse but I am struck by the "failure to change his address on his driver's license" charge.
As long as you have him, I guess you might as well throw the book at him.
I guess.
Were all his headlights and windshield wipers in good working order?
Just curious.

Franklin Lakes NJ (where he was arrested) is one of those rich WASPy suburban enclaves where the police have absolutely nothing to do and have to somehow warrant their $100,000 salaries; the officer no doubt pulled Mr. Gooden over for DWB at first to begin with, if you know what I mean. I make no excuses for Doc, but he was in the wrong place to be a black man in a nice car.
Thanks. I guess this doesn't surprise me about a city known as "Franklin Lakes". I travel to Morristown every now and then and if I find myself in Franklin Lakes, I am going to be certain to do the speed limit, use all my turn signals, observe all signs etc. Let someone else fund their salaries.
Failure to change address on license? Nobody does that. I wasn't even aware that was a law. My god, people move constantly in the cities.
Very sad about Doc. I understand addictions, but what is hard to accept is putting strangers and his kids in danger. There are plenty of junkies who don't endanger others. If you're gonna do yourself in, don't take others down with you.
"Failure to change address on license"
- I think they charge him with all kinds of crap, so when the lawyers go to work they start dealing. "OK you plead guilty, we'll take away 5 of the charges".
Field of Cards,
I think that just shows you the depths of the addiction.
If in a sober state, you asked him if he would ever do anything to harm his son, I am sure that he would say no.

Tastelikedirt,
I was kind of thinking the same thing and I know that prosecutors do this all the time.
The thing is I can't see that the "address" charge would be much of a bargaining chip. What is it; a $50 fine?
Prosector: If you plead guilty to this and that, we will drop the address charge.
Doc: Sorry, no.
