Hey guys! Beanballs at the first spring training game?!
Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that in the Orioles/Rays game yesterday, home plate umpire Paul Emmel warned both benches after Orioles pitcher Matt Albers drilled lead off hitter Desmond Jennings in the top of the ninth after Rays pitcher, Luis De Los Santos hit Orioles player, Matt Angle in the bottom of the eighth.
Beanballs in the first spring training game?!
Hey guys! Didn't you get the memo?
You are supposed ease into the season. You know, bask in the sun. Sign a few autographs. Make crank calls to the bullpen. Think about the post-game buffet. That kind of thing.
The umpires also ease into the season, you know. They don't need this.
They are just getting used to "balls and strikes" and "safe and out" at this point.
Don't even think about delayed steals, the hidden ball trick or yelling "I got it" when you are running the bases.
Not the time. It's March.
Get with the program!

Do you recall, Elliot Johnson versus Francisco Cervelli at home plate last season?
That was a later spring training game as I recall. I think everybody was "eased in" by then. (wink)
I do like the fact that that play was memorialized on a baseball card though.
That was the highlight of the game by far! I was gonna say something else, but I better not...
C'mon Bacon-it was a great game! I love the Orioles' fire this early in the year. Don't mess with us!
Do not understimate the hatred that defines the O's / Rays rivalry. Families have been torn asunder by their decade-long battle in the AL East!!!! Red Sox vs. Yanks ain't got nothin' on these guys.... Seriously I think these two will be battling it out for a division title in a few years.
