There is a subtle but significant difference between "sleeping" and "unconscious".
I guess but the police report referred to him "snoring" on the side of the road. They had him asleep.
Possibly they had him asleep. I have transported quite a few unconscious people in the back of the ambulance who were snoring. It's a medical term as well as a common one. Means about the same - partially obstructed airway.
