Ernie Harwell 1918-2010

Legendary Hall of Fame Tigers broadcaster, Ernie Harwell passed away today at age 92.

Ernie lived in my hometown of Novi, Michigan just a few miles from my home. The last time I saw him was about 12 months ago at the library when he was checking out some books. I was sitting nearby at a computer terminal and did glance his way and catch his eye. He didn't know who I was but we did exchange a glance and a smile. That was his way.

Though everybody knew who he was, nobody really fawned over him the few times I crossed his path. People would make conversation with him of course but it was more of the "how are you doing?" variety rather than "can I have your autograph?" though I am sure that he would have happily signed for anybody.

Ernie was also probably one of the nicest people you would ever meet but that is pretty well known in this area. In the days to come quite a few people will no doubt expound on this as well as his accomplishments behind the microphone and how much he meant to Tiger fans and do so much better than I possibly could so I am going to leave that to others.

For me, he was just Ernie. Our Ernie, Detroit's Ernie. Novi's Ernie.

The Ernie who every time you saw him brought a smile to your face.

Every time.

RIP Ernie.

Sorry for your loss. I've spent my whole life listening to Vin Scully call Dodger games. I know one day he'll pass, and it probably will feel like a family member leaving me.
