Never saw that before

Yesterday, Computer Boy, Skate Kid and I went to Comerica Park to see the Mighty Detroit Tigers defeat the Hapless Disney-Neighbored Angels 10-6.

Computer Boy reminded me that I have not yet done an installment of "Never Saw That Before" for a game that we have attended this year.

For the uninitiated, it is my contention that if you watch any professional baseball game closely enough, you will see at least one thing that you have never seen before, no matter how minor or mundane. This was a semi-regular feature on the site last year. I say "semi-regular" because I frankly forget to do it more times than I remember.

So without further ado, here are some things I saw at last night's game which I have never seen before at a live ballgame.

1. In the 4th inning, Tiger rookies, Brennan Boesch and Scott Sizemore both hit their first major league home run. I have never seen two players hit their first home run in the same inning before. For what it is worth, the AP game story says it was last done in Cleveland in 2002. I was not at that game so I have never seen that before.

2. Brennan Boesch's first major league home run was a grand slam. I am sure that this has been done many times before but I have never seen it live.

3. In the 3rd inning, left handed batter Bobby Abreu of the Angels is up with a man on first base and less than two outs. The Angels put on a hit and run and for some unfathomable reason, Tiger second baseman, Scott Sizemore covers second base instead of the shortstop. Abreu hits a ground ball to the second base position that Sizemore just vacated for a hit. If the shortstop covers the bag on the steal attempt like he is supposed to on a left-handed batter, then you would have had an easy double play. I have never seen a second baseman cover the bag on a steal attempt with a left handed batter up so this counts as a "Never Saw That Before" moment. Obviously, Sizemore did not do this on his own so I will chalk this up to a brain-dead manager of which the Tigers have one. Sorry, it is true.

This concludes the first 2010 edition of "Never Saw That Before".

If Computer Boy keeps reminding me, maybe we will even do it again.

I've never seen "Never Saw That
Before", so I can add this to my list.
