

First of all, a five run lead is not that insurmountable nowadays.
Second, anything less than an eight or none run lead, and you pitch "normally". That means you hold runners on. Part of the job, you know.
You don't alter that so to "move the game along" for a sportswriter* on a "deadline".
This is the same guy that voted for Magglio Ordonez for MVP a few years ago depriving A-Rod of a unanimous MVP vote.
He's telling Verlander how to pitch.
