Carl Yastrzemski

On today's date in 1961, Red Sox rookie, Carl Yastrzemski gets a hit off Ray Herbert of the Kansas City Athletics which is the first of 3318 hits he will amass over his 23 year career.

"I loved the game. I loved the competition. But I never enjoyed it. All hard work all the time."

Depends on your outlook. I can't imagine playing the game and not enjoying it.

I thought about this quote for a while before posting because I was thinking the exact same thing.

How could he have excelled like he did, even if he worked hard every single day, if he didn't really like what he was doing?

I take his word for it though.

I do know that he no longer likes to talk about baseball and does other things in his retirement.
