Burleigh Grimes
On this date in 1931, the Cardinals release the last legal spitballer, Burleigh Grimes.
"They talk as if all you had to do to throw a spitball was to crank up and throw one. Don't they know it's the hardest pitch there is to control? It takes a lot of practice and you don't just throw one when you figure it might get the hitter out. Apparently the worst thing about catching Grimes was when the ball got hit. Face full of spit.
