"My first roommate was black. I'd never been around, known, introduced to or talked to a black man in my life. This was back in 1957. His name was Bill Bahamian. We were to room together and I walked into the room and he was black and I was scared of him and I didn't know what to do. And after we had got to know each other, it turned out he had been scared of me."
