Ray Chapman

On this date in 1920, Indians shortstop, Ray Chapman is beaned by a pitch from Carl Mays of the Yankees. Chapman sustains a fractured skull and dies the next day.

"He ran into a pitch that would have been a strike if he had stayed in the batter's box." - Carl Mays

"Why wasn't he wearing a helmet?" - my 9 year old son, Louis when we visited the Ray Chapman memorial plaque at Progressive Field last year
