On this date in 1988, Kirk Gibson of the Dodgers walks off the field before his first spring training game with the club after teammate Jesse Orosco places eye black in his cap causing Gibson to unknowingly wipe it all over himself on the field.
"Tommy (Lasorda), you find out what son of a bitch did this, because I'm going to tear his head off!"
