Ron Swoboda

On this date in 1969, Ron Swoboda of the Mets makes one of the greatest catches in World Series history. Swoboda's sliding grab of Brooks Robinson's sinking liner helps the Mets defeat the Orioles 2-1 in Game 4 of the World Series.

"I see Brooks Robinson these days once or twice a year and never fail to thank him for not hitting it right to me."

Ron is now a news guy here in New Orleans. I didn't find out he was a baseballer until just a few months ago.

He and Hoda Kotb were on the same news team for a while. I met Hoda once while working at the Esplanade Mall many years ago, and I told her if she married Ron her name would be Hoda Swaboda.
