On this date in 1959, Harvey Haddix of the Pirates takes a perfect game into the 13th inning against the Braves only to lose 1-0.
"Hey, you're pitching a pretty good game." - Braves catcher, Del Crandall to Haddix when Haddix came to bat in the ninth inning

Del Crandall - Rock & roll inspiration

Born today, none other than player and manager, Del Crandall.
I note that Crandall was ejected in the first inning of his very first major league game while catching for arguing balls and strikes after only two pitches. (Ya gotta get to know the umpires first, Del!)
Perhaps more noteworthy, Del Crandall was the inspiration for a Connecticut rock & roll band who named themselves "The Del Crandalls".
From the marquee, it does not appear that The Del Crandalls play very big venues and are probably not the biggest band around.
I bet they would be much bigger if they picked some other ballplayer's name like Bud Weiser, Chief Bender or even Urban Shocker.
Now of course, if they wanted to choose a name outside of baseball players names, then things could really get going.
You know like horror movies or communicable diseases; that kind of thing.
