Adrian Beltre to Boston?!

Didn't Dodgers and Mariners fans periodically boo the consistently inconsistent Beltre?

And now he's going to Boston?!

Have you seen THEIR fans? I mean the Boston Globe doesn't even bother carrying that Miss Manners column.

He's a career .179 hitter at Fenway.

Yea, this is gonna work.

Beltre will do just fine if he is healthy. He was in fact one of the most consistent players in baseball over a 10 year span.

Not consistently great, but consistently a solid hitter with a very nice glove. He is very similar to Mike Cameron, actually (.260 ba, 20-25 hr, 70-80 rbi, nice glove).

I guess Rabbit Ears impact a few players, but Beltre has been around a long time.

Gloves don't slump and fans go bonkers over a few web gems.

Then he throws up 20 hr and bam...

FOC,

I see a guy who averages 22 home runs a year in full time work (throwing out 1998) but has hit as little as 8 (477 abs), 13 and 15 in some years but also hit 48 in his monster 2004 year. I also see a .270 hitter who has hit as low as .240 but as high as .334. This just seems a little Saberhagen-esq to me.

I do give him credit as he apparently only wanted a one year contract to prove himself and then be in a better position for a multi-year contract next year after presumably a good year in 2010. You don't see that too often.

Hes terrific at the hot corner, there not many better than him at that position.

CC, I hear ya, but if you had 100 bucks would you bet Beltre would hit closer to 20 hr, 8 hr, or 48 hr? History says 20 is the incredibly safe bet.

His aberrations are no different than most players of this era (Lowell: 8 hr, 32 hr, .236 ba, .324 ba). In fact Beltre's high was probably due to steroids and his lows were most definitely due to injury. They can be thrown out in a sense.

I can tell you I'd be very happy to have Beltre on my team.

Anything can happen but if Beltre is healed, he is an excellent signing.

He's no superstar, true, but before Beltre's 2009 season he was one of those players that was on pace to reach age 38 with about 2800 hits and 400 home runs as a third baseman. Pretty impressive for a guy who never dominates.

FOC,

It is pretty funny because I was going to ask you what a proper over/unde figure would be for home runs for Beltre next year (I was going to throw out 25) but you kind of asked that in a different way.

As to your question, I would bet that he would be most closest to 20 home runs but by the same token, I would probably want more than that from my third baseman.

It looks like both of us will be watching his totals next year.

And to Oregonshane as well, I do appreciate his defense. Around here, everybody says Brandon Inge is the best third baseman defensively (statistically he is below average but he does make some spectacular plays) and when I tell them that he is not really close to Beltre, they stop talking to me.
