What if he had won?

Happy 60th Birthday to retired Padres and Mets pitcher, Randy Jones!

Did you know that the Padres have retired his jersey number 35?

I note that his record with the Padres was 92-105.

What would they have done for him if he had a winning record?

I bet that he would have a bronze statue just outside the park.

But don't mind me, Randy. Enjoy the day!

Wow! I didn't know the Padres had retired his number. How funny is that? He was fun to watch as a pitcher though and was better than his record.

Agreed.

I remember one year he got off to a very fast start and was even a threat to win 30 but he cooled off a bit but still had a very good year.

I know the Padres were rotten back then but I was still surprised to see that he had a losing record.

Jones had won 20 in 75, then was 18-4 on July 20th, 1976. He threw a 10-inning complete game for his 18th win. The rest of the year he went 4-10.

He threw 43 complete games combined in those two years (75 and 76). And he won 42 games those two years, about 30% of the Padres' team wins.

He had a couple of good years after that, but under the workload his arm just about fell off and he was done at 32.

I suspect his relative worth in those two years probably make him pretty popular amongst fans from back in the day.

And he's still second in career wins as a Padre (only Eric Show's 100 wins are ahead of Jones. Jake Peavy shares 2nd place.)

Gosh, I sure do love Extreme Trivia!!!
