Ok, this always kind of gets me
In an article by Bob Elliott of the London (Ontario)Free Press, much maligned and frequently booed Vernon Wells has this quote regarding his relationship with the fans in Toronto:
"The last couple of years I heard everything from fans at the park, you name it. People were always very nice away from the park where we live (in nearby Mississauga). We'd do shopping to a grocery store without any problem."
Personally, I would never boo any player of our hometown Detroit Tigers. For me, it goes against the principle of rooting for the team and hoping they win. There are some players I like more than others of course but no Tiger gets booed. Ever. Come to think of it, I don't ever recall booing a visiting player. I guess I am not much of a "booer". The opponents are fair game though.
That said, if you are going to be man (well or lady) enough to boo a player at the park or call them a "bum", then don't fawn over them the next day or ask for their autograph at the grocery store.
It makes you look like kind of an insincere jock-sniffer.
If you are going to boo them at the park, then you should boo or heckle them at the grocery store. (Well not really but you get my point, I think)
Have a little integrity, ok?

Well said. People can be mean when they're behind the wheel of a car, or on the Internet, or in a crowd. In other words, when they're not face to face. This seems rather cowardly.
Amen. And I'd take the "kind of" out of your third-to-last paragraph.
