i'm for the human element myself. no replays ! when we're talking about close plays...in the course of a season you win some, you lose some - and they generally balance out.
certainly this play doesnt qualify at all. that's a great pic of one of those 'phantom outs' that umps regularly give to the defense, most frequently at second base.
i suppose those even out over a season as well...but i hate it being that friggin blatant and i double hate it going against my team.
I don't want any instant replay in baseball for the reason you mentioned; these calls even out over the course of a year and in the end it is not that big of a deal. I think we are in the distinct minority though.
That said, I don't know why any of the other umpires could not have assisted the first base umpire who was momentarily screened on the play. If the others "didn't see it", well then what were they watching?
