Curt Schilling
On this date in 2001, Curt Schilling of the Diamondbacks takes a no-hitter into the 8th inning against the Padres before Ben Davis breaks it up with a bunt single. Some observers claim that Davis broke an unwritten rule by bunting with a no-hitter on the line.
"I was mad that it was such a bad bunt and was still a hit. He bunted as bad a ball as you can bunt, to the most perfect spot in the infield to bunt it. I never said it was a horseshit play. I said it was a horseshit bunt." - Curt Schilling

Curt Schilling
On this date in 2004, Curt Schilling, pitching on a dislocated ankle tendon held down by three sutures put in the day before, gives up one run over seven innings as the Red Sox beat the Yankees in Game Six of the ALCS.
"If you have the nuts, or the guts, grab an orthopedic surgeon, have them suture your ankle skin down to the tissue covering the bone in your ankle joint, then walk around for four hours. After that, go find a mound, throw a hundred or so pitches, run over, cover first a few times. When you're done, check the ankle and see if it bleeds. It will." - responding to announcer Gary Thorne who questioned whether the stain on the sock was really blood

Curt Schilling
On this date in 2002, Curt Schilling of the Diamondbacks fans eight batters to give him 300 on the season. He and Randy Johnson become the first teammates to record 300 strikeouts in the same season.
"What is he going to do about it? Arm-tackle me?" - after throwing at Deion Sanders

I think Aaron Sele got that Hall of Fame vote....
Might've even been a hanging chad!

Curt Schilling
Born on today's date, Curt Schilling.
"It was absolutely irresponsible and wrong to say what I did."* - On his comments on Barry Bonds "cheating on his wife, cheating on his taxes and cheating on the game."
*Probably not the only time he has had to say something like that.

Morris vs Schilling

Boston Globe columnist, Dan Shaughnessy writing for Sports Illustrated has a recent article up on the SI website on his Hall of Fame ballot.
It is actually rather boring with the exception of this gem of a paragraph:
"(Jack) Morris won 254 games in 18 seasons and pitched one of the greatest World Series games of all time, a 10-inning, 1-0 Game 7 victory over the Braves in 1991. There's already support for Boston blowhard Curt Schilling, who won't be on the ballot for another three years, but Morris has to get in before Schilling gets in. Morris was better."
Hmmm. This is interesting as it does not really square with my recollection of these two players but I am human and prone to error just like everybody else so let's check this out.
Ok did it.
Here are the stats:
Jack Morris: 254-186, .577 winning percentage, 3.90 ERA (just think about that number for a potential Hall of Famer), 1.29 WHIP, 5.8 K/9 rate, 3.3 BB/9 rate.
Post season - 7-4, 3.80 ERA (What would his ERA have been without that 1991 game?)
Curt Schilling: 216-146, .597 winning percentage, 3.46 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 8.6 K/9 rate,2.0 BB/9 rate.
Post season - 11-2, 2.23 ERA
Sorry, not close. Morris, while good, is just a poser compared to Schilling.
Shaughnessy, you are killing me here with hysterical appendicitis-inducing laughter. Just killing me.
You are stealing from Sports Illustrated.
Ok, that's a little strong.
But if I was them, I wouldn't pay.

I think it might be something else

Nice little "Winter Classic" event that the NHL put on yesterday in Fenway Park.
I especially liked Dan Carcillo of the Flyers saying before the game that he was going to get into a fight and then after the fight he said that he really didn't want to but the other guy started it. He also said that the fight reminded him of "playing" on the frozen ponds when he was a kid. Sounds like my neighborhood way back when. It beats carrying a gun, you know.
Anyway, for some reason, NBC allowed always-annoying* Curt Schilling on the broadcast. In a way, I guess I do not blame them as he was probably hounding them for months and maybe even threatened a lawsuit. Schilling did play for both Boston and Philadelphia during his career and had this to say about the difference between the two cities:
"I think the difference is that maybe in Boston, you have to drive around and listen to fans berate you for a week. In Philadelphia, the fans might throw something at you. It's maybe a little more physical in Philadelphia."
Or maybe it's just you, Curt.
Sorry.**
*This is being kind.
**Well, actually no I'm not.
