As we are right up on the start of the MLB season, now is the time to announce CC's MLB All Star Team.
Now these guys are not necessarily the best at their respective positions. As a matter of fact, in scanning the list, I see one guy who cannot in any sense even be considered good. I also note one guy who is technically retired but must be included because of one shining moment which deserves to be memorialized. The criteria for entry on this list is hmmmm.................well, I like em.
Without further ado, meet CC's MLB All Star Team:
C - A. J. Pierzynski: A total instigator and it is my understanding that even his own teammates despise him. You gotta give it up to a guy who completely fools an umpire like he did in the playoffs against the Angels on that "dropped third strike" call. Here is a short story on another incident. A few years back in a game against the Tigers, Craig Monroe of the Tigers hits a home run in a crucial spot. As Monroe is crossing the plate to conclude his home run trot, A. J. subtly sticks out his right elbow and jabs Monroe in the ribs as he is crossing the plate sparking an on-field altercation between the teams. A. J., of course, professed no knowledge of how his elbow got there or that it was even there. You gotta love it.
1B - Mark Teixeira: I saw a game last year against the Tigers where he golfed out a very low and inside pitch that I cannot believe anyone would swing at. Not only did he swing at it, he hit it 20-25 rows up in the right field seats. I looked at my buddy and said "Now how did he do that? Just where are you supposed to pitch him then?"
2B - Jeff Kent: He once got in a fistfight with Barry Bonds in the dugout in the middle of a game. I know Kent is, to put mildy, a somewhat difficult person but still HE GOT IN A FISTFIGHT WITH BARRY BONDS IN THE DUGOUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A GAME. Landed some punches too. Where is my Hall of Fame ballot.
3B - Eric Chavez: I always loved the A's jerseys going back to when I was a kid. Why do they have elephants on their sleeves? I don't have much affection for Chavez and he really seems to be slowing down prematurely but he is on the A's and wears a cool looking jersey.
SS - Julio Lugo: We were at a Tigers/Red Sox game with the Tigers ahead but in a tight spot with Lugo coming up. I told my son not to worry because Lugo is not much of a hitter (actually not much of anything) and almost never hits home runs so we were probably safe until the next batter. He promptly hit one out. This guy keeps me humble.
RF- Magglio Ordonez: Quiet, unassuming, efficient. Man, I love Magglio but there is an added bonus with him. A few years ago, he grew his hair very long; below shoulder length. I once saw him try to break up a double play and try to take out the shortstop with a slide. He ended up on all fours and his hat fell off. With his hair all strewn across the front of his face down to his chin and a very dirty front of his uniform with dust flying all around him, he looked like the lead singer of Slayer or something. It was a great visual and we need more of this on the baseball diamond.
CF - Curtis Granderson: All around good guy and very active in our community. Universally loved in Detroit. I could go on and on. Mr. and Mrs. Granderson, you did well.
LF - Josh Hamilton: I know, I know, he is a right fielder but we already have Magglio on the team at that position and both of these guys have to be on the team so Josh gets moved over to left. Computer Boy's favorite player. Props to this guy for turning his life around. It would have been real easy to just quit in the midst of those problems. We will be at Comerica Park on May 19th when the Rangers come to town. Computer Boy is bringing his card and a sharpie (just in case).
SP - Brandon Webb: I love sinker ball pitchers as they can make a hitter look foolish and if the pitch is really working, even if they hit it, the hitters usually just beat it into the ground. Webb by most accounts has the best sinker in the majors; so good that he doesn't really need another pitch.
RP - Huston Street: He totally grooved that pitch that Magglio hit out to clinch the 2006 ALCS. That was great. I never saw Computer Boy so excited.
I am not going to fill out the pitching staff because it would just be too long, you know.
Just a few more days. (Obviously, I could go and count the days but it is close so let's just go with that, ok)
