Ok, with Mark McGwire now formally back in baseball, you have to wonder just where is Barry Bonds' hitting coach position.
The dude could seriously hit. Like about a million times better than McGwire, give or take a quarter million.
If Barry Bonds is talking "hitting", I am listening. If Mark McGwire is talking "hitting", I might ask him to show me how far he can hit a ball but that might be it.
As with McGwire, Bonds doesn't like talking about the past but McGwire is now back in so.....
What's the difference?*
Just askin.
*Yea, I know that Barry Bonds is being criminally prosecuted for his lying about his drug use but Dave Parker also took his share of illegal substances and testified in a drug trial and he went on to be a hitting coach. I also know that Bonds is a creep of the highest order but have you ever heard sportswriters talk about Mark McGwire?

Barry would still want to hit 4th in the lineup, that's the difference. Give it 5 more years.
Hmmmm....not to sway way off topic, but I'd say race has a lot to do with how Bonds and Mac have been handled by the media.
Admitted users like A-rod and suspected users like Clemens and Mac haven't been treated with half of the self-righteous scrutiny Bonds has received. Once allegations were made, Clemens and Mac became every bit the jerk Bonds has been cast as. Moreover, the whole "no comment" before Congress episode was blood in the water, only the sharks decided to go elsewhere. I'm pretty disappointed with the sportswriters based on that alone.
And one last thing: does anyone remember what happened when Bo was accused of being a user? He categorically denied it and immediately initiated proceedings to sue the crap out of the guy who said it. There wasn't any of this "no comment," wait and see stuff. THAT's how a guy who is innocent acts.
Sharpe,
I agree that Bonds would still want to play and this would be an impediment to him accepting (though none is going to be offered) a hitting coach position from a team.
I think my point is more rhetorical.

CCC,
I agree that race is one factor here though Roger Clemens, for a white guy, sure got a great deal of condemnation after his testimony before Congress and frivolous lawsuit against his trainer.
I think what confuses the issue with Bonds is that he is an absolute ass so that gives some people the chance to say that this is not racial with him and that they don't like him solely because of his behavior. There is no way to prove it but I think many people don't like him for a combination of reasons; one of which is race but his behavior and also his cheating to break a cherished record are others.
When Bonds was "news", I would occasionally listen to sports talk radio on the subject and practically 100% of callers who identified themselves as African-Americans supported him and practically 100% of people who identified themselves as caucasians denounced him. That is a bit troubling but reflective of that fact that I believe race is a factor in there somewhere.
If the guy wasn't such an ass, you might be able to figure out the racial angle better but well he is.
Kevin
