The guy has enough hardware, ok?

Derek Jeter wins another gold glove?!

No, really. It's in the papers.

How does something like this happen AGAIN?

This is not going to be easy but let's try and figure it out.

Is it because he catches balls hit right to him?

Is it because he is a good hitter?

Is it because he sometimes jumps when he throws?

Is it because he is a good hitter?

Is it because they haven't moved him yet to center field so he must be good?

Is it because he is a good hitter?

Is it because I once heard an ecstatic John Sterling say that Derek Jeter is the bestest shortstop ever because he is so good at catching pop-ups in shallow left field? I heard him say it! Check the tape.

Is it because he is a good hitter?

Is it because he tries real hard on balls hit to his left that get to the outfield?

Is it because he is a good hitter?

I am definitely leaning towards one of these.

It's because he's Derek Jeter. Interestingly, he was actually a good defensive shortstop this year (much better than the last few). Sure, he probably wasn't the best, but nobody in the AL was particularly outstanding this season. This will probably be his last one before Elvis Andrus puts a stranglehold on it for the next decade.

Is that Corey Hart on his card (I swear it looks like Corey Hart).

Grand,

I know his defensive metrics were better this year but this is still Derek Jeter after all.

They keep giving him gold gloves to make up for the fact that he has never won an MVP. He shoulda gotten the award in 06. And too bad Mauer had such a great year this time around cause Jeter had one his best but it wasn't quite enough again.

He wins gold gloves because when he does make plays, they look so damn pretty. His signature jumping throw across his body when going to the right is a much harder play than it looks, his consistent over the shoulder basket catch of pop ups in shallow left is no walk in the park for most players either. His jump over players at second as he turns two is just flat out graceful (not hard to do but he's gotta be rackin up the brownie points somehow).
Then you have the stand-out godlike plays that will be on highlight reels forever. The headlong run into the stands to catch that pop-up is one of those. The other is "The Flip" from foul territory on the first base side to nab Giambi at the plate.

He definitely wasn't the best defensive shortstop this year, but he did have huge improvement. However that shouldn't be justification for a gold glove. He wins gold gloves for the same reason that Torii Hunter still wins gold gloves, the voters are in love with them.

Nico,

You have an impressive "off the cuff" knowledge and recall of Jeter's defensive characteristics and highlights. While reading your response, I found myself remembering that stuff again and again.

My memory just "ain't" that good umprompted.

By the way, it was undeniably great play on the Giambi play but if you look at the replay he was really out of position and only got the ball because he was in nowhere-land at the time.
