He can rake (well kind of) (ok, not all)

Todd Zolecki of mlb.com reports that Phillies catcher, Dane Sardinha was arrested Monday morning for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol.

I remember Dane Sardinha. Yes, I remember Dane Sardinha.

I was at a Tiger game last year and Sardinha was the starting catcher and came to the plate with one or two outs (I cannot remember) with a runner on first base. He is a .125 career hitter and as I recall he was hitting less than .100 at the time. An obvious bunting situation. Sardinha then attempts to bunt on the next two pitches fouling both off. Obviously is it somewhat rare to attempt a bunt with two strikes but I recall saying to my buddy, "He's batting less than .100 and can't hit to save his life. You gotta have him bunting here. Right?" As I recall, my buddy who knows baseball pretty well responded something like, "No question. The alternative is a swinging (or taking the pitch) strikeout". While an unconventional play, we both thought it was a "no-brainer".

Of course, Tiger (mis?)manager, Jim Leyland had Sardinha swinging and he struck out on the next pitch and made his long familiar walk back to the dugout .

You know, sometimes as a manager you just gotta let your hair down a little. Live life to it's fullest. Give it a try.

The alternative is that you have Dane Sardinha swinging away with men on base and you don't want that.
