Wouldn't happen today

On this date in 1988, the Angels opened their game against the Brewers with just two outfielders in the field.

It seems center fielder Devon Young was in the clubhouse finishing up a phone call when the game started. Right fielder Chili Davis tried to alert the umpires but apparently could not get their attention so the Angels played with eight defenders for a portion of the first inning. The Angels won anyway 7-3. See, defense is overrated.

I think most phones back then were landlines attached to a cord. This one might even have been a rotary.

Today with cell phones, White is out there.

He needs to take a few lessons from Joe Horn.
