1957 Topps - Bob Keegan

Look Bob, I know I am not the first pitching coach to tell you this but in order to make a pitch, you have to actually let go of the ball. Don't be afraid. Release it!

If you keep doing this, the umpire will call a ball every time and also a balk if there are runners on base. This is not a recipe for success. Do you understand me?

If we can't get past this step, we are going to have to work on some hypnotic or shock therapy or something.

Now let's try it again. RELEASE THE BALL THIS TIME!

Bob's nickname was "Keeper". Bob "Keeper" Keegan. When he was in the rotation, he would often return home with 3 or 4 extra balls.

After the third season with the Sox, his wife, Beatrice, filed for divorce citing, "irreconcilable differences" and "too many %&@! baseballs around the house."

The judge sent them to marriage counseling where they worked out their differences. Bob got out of baseball and worked as a carnie in the midwest circuit.

Based on what they paid these guys back then, a carnie's wage was probably competitive. I also heard that the lucrative southwest circuit was a bit better than the midwest circuit for carnies so he undoubtedly lost a few dollars there.

I think his tenure on earth cries out for a well-written biography.
