Persona non Gaga

Bill Madden of the New York Daily News reports that the Yankees brass was furious to find out that Lady Ga Ga was able to gain entrance to the Yankees clubhouse and hold court with the players after Friday's loss so they have banned the partially clothed one from the clubhouse.
"We are embarrassed by what happened and it has been addressed." Unidentified Yankee official
Something also tells me that the stadium dress code, whatever it is, will start to be enforced again.
Oh well. Fun while it lasted, I guess.
Hey! I bet the bleachers at Wrigley would have her.
No private suite and would have to sit with the rabble though.
How bad do you want to sell cds?

Savvy politician, that Obama

Yankees visit White House today and Obama ignores A-Rod.
Of course, politicians by nature avoid radioactive people.
What was the over/under on eye contact when they shook hands? 1/100th of a second?
Obama's no fool.

And why do you think that is so?

AP reports that Major League Baseball has advised the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers that they must speed up their games. Apparently the Yankees played the longest nine-inning games last year clocking in at 3:08 with the Red Sox and Dodgers clocking in at 3:04 and 3:02 respectively. The MLB average is apparently 2 hours and 52 minutes.
I think these teams score too many runs. A fatal flaw.
"Why can't you be more like the Pirates?! We got guidelines you know!"

The difference is only $182,492,435

AP reports that the Florida Marlins again finished with the lowest payroll in baseball last year coming in at $37,532,482. The difference between them and the top-spending Yankees was a mere $182,492,435.
Think about it. These two teams are competing in the same league.*
You know, if you make the kids start paying, you might have a few more dollars.**
Just sayin.
*No, I am not talking about the "American League" and "National League" but you get the picture.
**From a selfish perspective as a father of two young baseball fans, I don't think kids should pay for anything but still....

Phil Hughes saves the day!

In the Yankees 10-2 win over the Orioles Wednesday, incredibly pitcher Phil Hughes was credited (it is hard to say earned) with a save. He retired one batter in the 8th inning with a one run lead and he then retired 3 batters in the ninth inning with an 8 run lead. Good thing for the Yankees. He saved the day!* Yea, Phil!
Remember this the next time you hear someone say that it is a travesty that someone like Lee Smith is not in the Hall of Fame because he racked up all of those saves.
*Actually, Hughes' save was positively nail-biting compared to Wes Littleton who was awarded a save in the Rangers 30-3 win over the Orioles on 8-22-07. Littleton entered the game with a 14-3 lead in the seventh inning and then proceeded to "shut the door" on the surging Orioles to preserve what became a 30-3 win.** True story. Look it up.
**If it was a hockey game, I bet that he wouldn't have even been one of the "three stars" of the game. Good enough for a save though.

Not buying it

You know, sometimes baseball games go long. Really long. Extra, extra innings. Someone has to win.
ESPN is turning last night's game into some epic and historic game just because the Yankees and Red Sox played into extra innings.
Not buying it.
Sorry.

The Yankees' payroll (kind of) exceeds that of the All Star team

Per bugsandcranks.com, the average salary of a 2009 All Star is $7,404,184 which is $410,917 less than what the average New York Yankee makes - $7,748,046.
I guess I should be all "outraged" about this but considering that the Yankees have not won a World Series since 2000 and didn't even make the playoffs last year, I have to put this in the "so it is" file.
I suppose you could say that this championship drought by the Yankees is proof that they do not spend wisely on their payroll but they are a profitable franchise and I think much of that profit is generated by the "star power" of their lineup so I don't know that this argument works; from a business standpoint anyway.
The more I think about it, this may more properly belong in the "whatever" file and I guess I will have to give a little more thought to the proper filing of this interesting factoid.
